Target intelligence / Profile preview
Beta-lactamase enzymes are bacterial proteins that confer resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by hydrolyzing the characteristic four-membered beta-lactam ring. Ambler class C beta-lactamases, also known as AmpC or cephalosporinases, are a major subgroup within this family and play a significant role in antibiotic resistance among Gram-negative bacteria. They efficiently hydrolyze many penicillins and early-generation cephalosporins, but not cefepime, and are not inhibited by clavulanic acid or tazobactam. Their genetic mobility via plasmids enables rapid dissemination across bacterial populations.
Hydrolyzes the beta-lactam ring of antibiotics, rendering them ineffective.
