Target intelligence / Profile preview
Attenuated live Bordetella pertussis bacteria serve as a vaccine to prevent whooping cough. The attenuated strain stimulates a robust immune response without causing severe disease, mimicking a natural infection to generate long-lasting immunity. Genetic modifications or serial passages are used to reduce virulence while retaining immunogenicity. Example: BPZE1
The attenuated B. pertussis strain replicates within the host to a limited extent, expressing key antigens (FHA, PRN, FIMs) that stimulate the immune system, leading to the production of antibodies and cell-mediated immunity against wild-type B. pertussis.
