Bordetella pertussis expresses two main serologically distinct fimbrial antigens, Fimbriae type 2 (Fim2) and Fimbriae type 3 (Fim3). These surface-exposed protein structures act as adhesins, facilitating attachment to respiratory epithelial cells. They are key components of acellular pertussis vaccines, inducing protective antibody responses. Biological differences between strains expressing different fimbria types can affect virulence characteristics such as biofilm formation and immune response induction.
These are vaccine components that elicit an antibody response against Bordetella pertussis, preventing or mitigating infection.
