Overview

Boule homolog, RNA binding protein (BOLL) is a member of the DAZ gene family, which is required for germ cell development, specifically during spermatogenesis. The BOLL gene encodes an RNA-binding protein structurally more similar to Drosophila Boule than to other human DAZ family members. Loss of BOLL function leads to male infertility, primarily through a block at the meiotic G2/M transition, resulting in azoospermia (absence of sperm in semen). The protein may regulate the translation of specific mRNAs by binding their 3’-UTRs. Although BOLL has been associated with several malignancies in the literature, there is no evidence identifying it as a therapeutic target, nor are there approved drugs that interact directly with BOLL. Its primary clinical role lies in reproduction and fertility, with some research interest in cancer correlation
