Overview

BPI fold containing family B member 5, pseudogene (BPIFB5P), also known as the long palate, lung and nasal epithelium protein 5 pseudogene, is a non-coding pseudogene in humans and does not produce a functional protein product. Its functional ortholog (BPIFB5), found in other mammals such as rodents and even-toed ungulates, participates in innate defense in mucosal tissues, but in humans, BPIFB5 is present only as a pseudogene due to evolutionary gene loss. The BPIFB5P gene is part of the BPI fold containing (BPIF) superfamily, known for roles in lipid binding and innate immunity in functional family members. However, BPIFB5P itself has no known molecular, biological, or disease roles in humans.
