Overview

The broad oral microbiota, volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), and oral biomolecules represent a complex ecological and biochemical system rather than a single therapeutic target. These compounds are the primary drivers of halitosis and can exacerbate periodontal disease by increasing the permeability of the oral mucosa and stimulating the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines (Ratcliff & Johnson, 1999). Oral biomolecules, including salivary enzymes and immunoglobulins, act as host mediators that attempt to regulate this microbial balance. Therapeutic interventions typically involve broad-spectrum antiseptics to reduce bacterial load or metal salts to neutralize VSCs, though modern approaches are shifting toward microbiome modulation via probiotics (Yoo et al., 2020). Because this entry encompasses an entire microbial ecosystem and its metabolic byproducts, it is classified as a multi-factorial biological environment rather than a discrete molecular target.
