The C19orf47e9–AKT2e2 chimeric RNA is a fusion transcript formed by the joining of exon 9 of the C19orf47 gene (also known as PIGBOS1) and exon 2 of the AKT2 gene. This specific chimeric RNA has been identified as a recurrent genetic alteration in prostate cancer, where it serves as a potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarker (Qin et al., 2017, Cancer Letters). The fusion typically results in the overexpression of the AKT2 protein or the production of a fusion protein that retains the functional kinase domain of AKT2. Because AKT2 is a critical component of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway, its dysregulation via this fusion promotes oncogenic processes such as increased cell proliferation, survival, and metabolic reprogramming (Zhang et al., 2020, Frontiers in Oncology).
