Overview

A calcium channel protein (non-selective) refers to a class of ion channels that are permeable to calcium ions (\(\mathrm{Ca}^{2+}\)) but do not exclusively select for them, allowing other cations such as sodium (\(\mathrm{Na}^+\)) and potassium (\(\mathrm{K}^+\)) to pass through as well. These channels play critical roles in cellular physiology by mediating the influx of \(\mathrm{Ca}^{2+}\) and other cations across cell membranes, thereby influencing processes like muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, gene expression, and various signaling pathways. Key families include TRP channels, P2X receptors, CNG channels, ASICs, and SOCs. Dysfunction is linked with diseases such as hypertension, arrhythmias, and epilepsy.
