Calcium channel proteins are membrane-spanning ion channels that facilitate the selective or semi-selective passage of calcium ions (Ca²⁺) across cellular membranes. These channels play a critical role in numerous physiological processes, including muscle contraction, neurotransmitter release, gene expression, and cell signaling. The term "nonspecific" refers to cation channels that are permeable to calcium as well as other cations such as sodium and potassium. Key examples include voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs), ligand-gated channels, store-operated channels, Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) channels, P2X receptors, cyclic nucleotide-gated (CNG) channels, acid-sensing ion channels, and CatSper channels. Dysfunction or genetic mutations affecting these proteins have been linked to various diseases.
