Calcium ion chelation refers to the process by which calcium ions (Ca2+) are bound and sequestered by chelating agents. This interaction is crucial in both physiological regulation and therapeutic interventions, as it modulates calcium's bioavailability and prevents pathological mineralization or toxicity. Chelating agents, such as vitamin K-dependent proteins (e.g., matrix Gla protein [MGP] and osteocalcin), bind calcium ions and prevent inappropriate deposition of calcium in soft tissues. Exogenous chelators like EDTA are used clinically to treat heavy metal poisoning and can also bind Ca2+. The proper regulation of free vs. bound Ca2+ is vital for cardiovascular integrity and bone health.
