Overview

cAMP-specific 3',5'-cyclic phosphodiesterase 4C (PDE4C) is an enzyme encoded by the PDE4C gene, predominantly expressed in peripheral tissues[3]. It belongs to the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase superfamily and is a member of the PDE4 subfamily. PDE4C hydrolyzes the second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), regulating essential signaling pathways that control physiological responses to extracellular stimuli. The enzyme's catalytic domain binds bivalent metal ions (zinc and magnesium), which are crucial for its activity[1]. PDE4C is structurally similar to other PDE4 family members, which are recognized therapeutic targets for treating inflammatory diseases, certain respiratory disorders, and neuropsychiatric conditions. However, PDE4C is less characterized than other family members (such as PDE4D and PDE4B) regarding tissue distribution and disease relevance[2][3].
