Overview

Canine parvovirus type 2b (CPV-2b) antigens, primarily the VP2 capsid protein, are the structural components of the CPV-2b viral variant [1, 2]. The VP2 protein is the major determinant of the virus's host range, its ability to bind to the host transferrin receptor, and its overall antigenicity [2, 5]. These antigens are the primary targets for preventive vaccines, which induce neutralizing antibodies to provide immunity, and for diagnostic assays that detect viral presence in clinical samples [1, 4]. Recently, the Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody was developed to specifically target and neutralize these viral antigens, offering a direct therapeutic option for infected dogs [3]. The high mutation rate of the VP2 gene leads to antigenic drift, which can result in the emergence of new variants and potential vaccine escape, necessitating continuous monitoring of circulating strains [2, 5]. In addition to enteritis, these antigens are involved in the pathogenesis of myocarditis in young puppies [1, 2]. Effective management of CPV-2b infection relies on the rapid detection of these antigens and the timely administration of supportive care or targeted antibody therapy [3, 4].
