Overview

CA15P1 (carbonic anhydrase 15, pseudogene 1) is a human pseudogene resulting from the carbonic anhydrase XV gene, which encodes carbonic anhydrase XV in several non-primate mammals but is nonfunctional in primates, including humans due to genetic inactivation. Carbonic anhydrase enzymes typically catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. However, CA15P1 does not encode a functional enzyme in humans. The parent functional gene, CA XV, is expressed in the kidney in certain animals (mouse, for example), playing roles in acid-base balance, but CA15P1 in humans is a pseudogene and has no expression as a functional protein. CA15P1 has no established therapeutic, diagnostic, or biomarker role in human medicine. There is no evidence of CA15P1 being involved in any disease process or having clinical relevance. In summary, CA15P1 is a nonfunctional pseudogene in humans from the carbonic anhydrase family, not a receptor, enzyme, or viable therapeutic target.
