Carbonyl reductase [NADPH] 3 (CBR3) is a monomeric, NADPH-dependent enzyme of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) superfamily that catalyzes the reduction of a broad range of endogenous and exogenous carbonyl compounds to their respective alcohols. It is involved in detoxification processes, as well as in the metabolism of pharmacologically active compounds, including some anticancer agents and quinones. CBR3’s activity shows substantial variability among individuals due to common genetic polymorphisms, most notably the V244M substitution, which influences catalytic efficiency and may be relevant for drug metabolism and response. The gene is expressed in multiple tissues and is implicated in disease processes such as cancer and neurodegeneration, in part through its role in protection against oxidative stress and xenobiotic toxicity[1][2][3][4][5]
