Cathepsin L family member 3, pseudogene (CTSL3P) is a transcribed unprocessed pseudogene located on chromosome 9q21.33.[1] It is related by sequence to the cathepsin L family of cysteine proteases, which are lysosomal endopeptidases important for intracellular protein degradation, antigen processing, tumor invasion, and other processes[3]. However, the CTSL3P locus is currently labeled as a pseudogene, as no functional protein product or enzymatic activity has been confirmed[7][4]. Certain sequence changes in the gene (such as the replacement of a stop codon by a tryptophan in some forms) have raised the possibility it could have been functional in the past, but there is no evidence of current protein expression or function[5]. Because it does not produce a protein, it is not considered a therapeutic target, biomarker, or risk locus for any disease to date. The designation of CTSL3P as a pseudogene may evolve if future studies reveal transcriptional or regulatory functions. Assessment of correctness: This entry is primarily a pseudogene.
