Overview

CD34 is a transmembrane phosphoglycoprotein encoded by the CD34 gene. It is primarily expressed on hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells but also present on some endothelial and mesenchymal cells. Functionally, CD34 acts as an adhesion molecule mediating attachment of stem cells to bone marrow extracellular matrix and stromal cells. Its expression is crucial for stem cell migration, homing, and immune cell trafficking. Clinically, CD34 marks cells for stem cell isolation in regenerative medicine and serves as a biomarker in oncology and hematology. Ongoing research investigates its broader roles in cell migration and tissue regeneration, as well as its involvement in cancer stem cell biology.
