CD4+ helper T cells are a subset of lymphocytes that play a central role in the adaptive immune system. They are characterized by the expression of the CD4 surface glycoprotein and function primarily to coordinate and regulate immune responses rather than directly killing infected or malignant cells. They are essential for activating B lymphocytes to produce antibodies, stimulating cytotoxic T lymphocytes to kill infected target cells, and enhancing phagocytic activity of macrophages and neutrophils. CD4+ helper T cells recognize antigens presented on MHC class II molecules found on antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Naive CD4+ helper T-cells can differentiate into several specialized subtypes including Th1, Th2, Th17, Regulatory T cells, Follicular helper T cells, and Th9.
