Overview

A CD4+ T-cell epitope is a short peptide fragment derived from a protein antigen that is specifically recognized by the T-cell receptor (TCR) on CD4+ helper T cells. These epitopes are presented on the surface of antigen-presenting cells bound to major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) molecules. Recognition of these epitopes by CD4+ T cells initiates and regulates immune responses against pathogens and tumors, but can also contribute to immunopathology in infections, autoimmune diseases, and allergies[1][2][3]. The identification and characterization of such epitopes are crucial for vaccine development, diagnostic reagent design, and as biomarkers for evaluating therapeutic efficacy[3]. However, "CD4+ T-cell epitope" does not refer to a single molecule or receptor but rather any peptide sequence capable of being presented by MHC-II molecules to activate CD4+ T cells; thus it is not itself a therapeutic target or molecular entity.
