CD4+ T-cell epitopes derived from tetanus toxoid are short linear peptides processed from this widely used vaccine antigen. They are essential triggers for adaptive immunity following vaccination due to their ability to activate helper functions via interaction with MHC-II-restricted receptors on human CD4+ lymphocytes. Their identification has enabled improved understanding and engineering of effective vaccines suitable for broad population coverage due to their frequent cross-HLA reactivity ("universal" status).
Epitope presented on MHC class II molecules activates CD4+ T cells, leading to T cell proliferation, cytokine secretion, B cell help and development of immunological memory.
