CD4+ T lymphocytes, also known as helper T cells, are a subset of T lymphocytes that play a central role in the adaptive immune system. They are characterized by the expression of the surface glycoprotein CD4 and are essential for coordinating immune responses against pathogens and other antigens. They differentiate into several effector subtypes with distinct functions including Th1, Th2, Th17, Tfh, and regulatory T cells. CD4 counts are used clinically as a marker for immunodeficiency states such as HIV/AIDS because HIV specifically targets these cells for infection. Engineered versions such as CAR-modified CD4+ T-cells have shown promise in immunotherapy applications.
CD4+ T cells are targeted by HIV for infection and destruction. Therapeutic strategies involve either preventing infection or restoring immune function through cell-based therapies.
