CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) are a specialized subset of T cells critical for immune defense against intracellular pathogens, such as viruses and some bacteria, as well as for tumor surveillance. They recognize antigenic peptides presented by MHC I molecules on target cells and eliminate target cells through the release of cytolytic molecules (perforin, granzymes), Fas/Fas ligand pathway, and cytokine secretion (TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma). Activated CTLs can differentiate into memory CD8+ T-cells, enabling rapid response upon re-exposure to previously encountered antigens.
