Overview

The recipient cell membrane is the phospholipid bilayer structure surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell that interacts with external substances, including extracellular vesicles such as exosomes, and mediates selective uptake, signal transduction, adhesion, and maintenance of the cell's internal environment. It is primarily composed of a lipid bilayer with embedded and associated proteins responsible for most membrane-specific biological functions. In therapeutic and research contexts, the term "recipient cell membrane" generically refers to the surface of a cell that receives molecules or vesicles from another cell, but does not denote a unique molecular structure or pharmacological target.
