When these cellular components are irradiated with specific wavelengths of light (typically blue or red), the accumulated PpIX undergoes a photochemical reaction that generates singlet oxygen and other reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to localized oxidative damage and subsequent cell death (Kennedy et al., 1990). This biological phenomenon serves as the functional basis for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photodynamic diagnosis (PDD), enabling both the selective destruction of tumors and their visualization through red fluorescence during surgery (Stummer et al., 2006).
