Cellular Components via Free Radical Generation (Oxidative Stress)

Overview

Oxidative stress refers to a cellular state characterized by an imbalance between the production of free radicals—primarily reactive oxygen species (ROS)—and the cell’s ability to detoxify these reactive intermediates or repair the resulting damage. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons, and their overproduction can lead to widespread damage of cellular components including lipids, proteins, and DNA. While low levels of ROS serve important roles in redox signaling pathways—regulating gene expression and cellular adaptation—overproduction leads to pathological outcomes due to overwhelming antioxidant defenses.

Mechanism of action

Oxidative stress is a process, not a specific protein target. Interacting drugs are antioxidants that neutralize free radicals or enhance antioxidant defenses.
