Cellular Components via Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (Singlet Oxygen)

Molecular classification
Lipids, Proteins, DNA, Reactive Oxygen Species
01

Overview

Cellular components that are affected or modified through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), specifically singlet oxygen (^1O_2). Singlet oxygen is a highly reactive form of molecular oxygen that can cause oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA, leading to cell dysfunction and death. While ROS play physiological roles in cell signaling and immune defense, excessive production leads to oxidative stress and contributes to various diseases. Singlet oxygen generation is also harnessed in photodynamic therapy for targeted destruction of tumor cells, although off-target cytotoxicity remains a concern.
