The cellular immune system is primarily composed of T lymphocytes, specifically CD4+ helper T cells and CD8+ cytotoxic T cells. These cells play critical roles in adaptive immunity, orchestrating immune responses and directly killing infected or cancerous cells. CD4+ T cells recognize exogenous antigens presented by MHC class II molecules and orchestrate immune responses by activating B-cells, supporting phagocytosis, and providing help to CD8+ T-cells. CD8+ T cells recognize endogenous antigens presented by MHC class I molecules and directly kill infected or cancerous target cells.
