Anatomical structure
01

Overview

The brainstem is a critical structure within the central nervous system, acting as the main conduit between the brain and spinal cord. It is located at the base of the brain and connects directly to the spinal cord. The brainstem is composed of three primary regions: the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. It regulates many essential life-sustaining processes, and serves as a passageway for all nerve fibers traveling between higher regions of the brain and lower regions such as the spinal cord. Ten out of twelve cranial nerves originate from nuclei within this region. Damage to any part of the brainstem can result in severe consequences due to its control over vital bodily functions.
