Disease Roles
Chikungunya Virus Envelope Protein Overview
The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) envelope proteins are critical structural components of the virus, primarily composed of E1 and E2 glycoproteins. E2 mediates receptor binding and E1 mediates membrane fusion. Both are vital for viral entry and are targets for neutralizing antibodies. They form heterodimers that assemble into trimeric spikes on the viral surface. These proteins are derived from a polyprotein precursor that undergoes post-translational processing.
