A chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) is a synthetic, engineered receptor that can be introduced into immune cells—most commonly T cells—to enable them to recognize and attack specific targets, such as cancer cells. The term "universal" in this context refers to the ability of CARs to function independently of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), allowing for broader application across different patients and target antigens.
CARs bind directly to surface molecules on target cells in an MHC-independent manner, leading to T cell activation, proliferation, cytokine secretion, and target cell lysis.
