Chitin synthase is a membrane-integral enzyme responsible for the biosynthesis of chitin, a linear polymer composed of N-acetylglucosamine units. Chitin is the second most abundant biological polymer after cellulose and serves as an essential structural component in insects, forming part of the cuticle and peritrophic matrix. The enzyme belongs to family 2 glycosyltransferases. Humans lack chitin and chitin synthase, making it an attractive target for selective pest control agents.
