Overview

Chitinase, acidic pseudogene 2 (CHIAP2) is a human pseudogene related to the chitinase gene family. Unlike active chitinases such as CHIA (acidic mammalian chitinase), CHIAP2 does not encode a functional enzyme and does not participate in chitin degradation. Pseudogenization of CHIA-like genes, including CHIAP2, commonly occurs in mammalian genomes and reflects evolutionary loss of function as dietary reliance on chitin declines in specific lineages. CHIAP2 has no established biological, therapeutic, or diagnostic roles in humans
