Clostridioides difficile (non-toxigenic strain) (Non-toxigenic C. difficile)

Target
Non-toxigenic C. difficile
Molecular classification
Bacterium, Commensal organism, Probiotic
01

Overview

Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive, anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium that can colonize the human gut. Non-toxigenic strains lack the genes encoding toxins A and B (tcdA/tcdB) and binary toxin (cdtAB), and do not cause disease. They are being investigated as potential therapeutic agents for preventing or inhibiting colonization by toxigenic strains through competitive exclusion and other mechanisms such as nutrient competition, bile acid modification, and production of inhibitory metabolites. They are being developed as live biotherapeutics to restore microbial balance and prevent recurrent CDI.
