Coagulation factor Xa (FXa) and coagulation factor IIa (Thrombin) are critical serine proteases within the blood coagulation cascade, serving as the primary targets for anticoagulant therapy. Factor Xa is responsible for the rate-limiting step of thrombin generation by converting prothrombin into its active form, thrombin (FIIa), as part of the prothrombinase complex (UniProt P00742). Managing these targets requires a delicate balance between preventing pathological thrombosis and maintaining physiological hemostasis to avoid life-threatening bleeding complications (PubMed: 30135135).
