Endemic to the southwestern United States, particularly California, the organism exists as a mold in the environment and transforms into a specialized structure called a spherule upon inhalation into the mammalian lung [PubMed: 29155684]. This transition is critical for its pathogenicity, as spherules release endospores that disseminate the infection within the host.
