Overview

Skin collagen fibers are elongated bundles of triple-helical collagen proteins, predominantly types I and III, located in the dermis where they form an interwoven meshwork responsible for the mechanical strength, resilience, and elasticity of the skin[1][2][3][4][5][8]. These fibers give skin its durability, repair capacity, and youthful appearance, but degrade and diminish with age, leading to wrinkles and loss of elasticity[2][4][6]. Collagen fiber organization is crucial in wound healing, scar formation, and in various hereditary or autoimmune connective tissue diseases[6][7][8]. Unlike classical therapeutic targets (receptors/enzymes), skin collagen fibers are not molecules to be inhibited or activated, but their amount and functional integrity are the focus of numerous cosmetic and clinical interventions aimed at supporting or restoring skin structure.
