Colon (Large Intestine)

Molecular classification
Organ, Digestive System Component
01

Overview

The colon, also known as the large intestine or large bowel, is a major organ of the digestive system. It extends from the end of the small intestine (ileocecal junction) to the rectum and anus. The colon is responsible for absorbing water and electrolytes, forming feces, and facilitating their elimination from the body. It is divided into the ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon. Key functions include absorption of water and electrolytes, formation and propulsion of feces, and absorption/production of vitamins by gut bacteria. It plays a role in diseases such as colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and diverticulitis.
