Overview

The "osmotic effect" in the colon refers to the movement of water into or out of the colonic lumen driven by osmotic gradients established by solute concentrations. This process is central to both normal physiology (water reabsorption) and pharmacological interventions such as osmotic laxatives. Osmotic laxatives exploit this mechanism by increasing luminal osmolarity, drawing water into the bowel, softening stool, and promoting bowel movements. In pathological states or with excessive intake of these agents, this can lead to diarrhea due to excess fluid retention within the colon.
