Disease Roles
Colon Epithelial Cell Overview
Colon epithelial cells are the primary cell type lining the luminal surface of the colon. They form a single layer of columnar epithelial cells, which are organized into crypts and play essential roles in nutrient absorption, barrier function, immune modulation, and maintenance of intestinal homeostasis. The colonic epithelium comprises several specialized cell types, including enterocytes, goblet cells, and enteroendocrine cells, all derived from stem cells at the base of the crypts.
