Overview

The copper(II) ion is a monoatomic cation of copper with a +2 charge. It is the most common oxidation state of copper in aqueous solution and many compounds. In solution, it often exists as the hexaaquacopper(II) complex. It acts as an essential cofactor for many enzymes involved in redox reactions and electron transport chains. Its distinctive blue color in water makes them easily identifiable during qualitative analysis.
