Target intelligence / Profile preview
The coronavirus spike glycoprotein, commonly referred to as the S protein, is the largest of the four major structural proteins found in coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2. It forms trimeric structures that protrude from the viral envelope and are responsible for giving coronaviruses their characteristic "crown-like" appearance under electron microscopy. The S protein is a class I fusion protein essential for mediating viral entry into host cells by binding to cellular receptors and facilitating membrane fusion.
