Overview
The cough center is a functional region within the medulla oblongata of the brainstem responsible for coordinating and generating the cough reflex. It integrates sensory input from peripheral cough receptors and orchestrates motor output to produce coughing, serving as a central node in the cough reflex arc. Key associated structures include nucleus tractus solitarius (nTS), pre-Bötzinger complex, caudal medullary raphe nuclei (nucleus raphe obscurus and magnus), pontine respiratory group, lateral tegmental field, and deep cerebellar nuclei.
