The Cough Center is not a single molecular entity but rather a functional region within the medulla oblongata of the brainstem that coordinates and controls coughing. It receives sensory input from receptors in the airways via cranial nerves such as the vagus nerve, processes this information through relay neurons like those in the solitary nucleus, and integrates signals with other respiratory networks including parts like the pre-Bötzinger complex. The center orchestrates motor output through spinal motor neurons to expiratory muscles and via nerves such as phrenic nerve to diaphragm. Higher brain centers can exert voluntary control over coughing, but involuntary coughing is primarily mediated by this central network. The exact anatomical boundaries are not strictly defined due to overlapping functions with other respiratory rhythm generators. Therapeutically, drugs targeting this system—such as antitussives—act by suppressing its activity.
