Overview

Cranberry extract, derived from the fruit of Vaccinium macrocarpon, is a complex mixture of phytochemicals primarily utilized for the prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs) (NIH, 2023). It is not a single molecular target but rather a therapeutic agent containing bioactive compounds such as A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), flavonols, and phenolic acids (PubMed, 2021). The primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of bacterial adhesion; specifically, PACs bind to the P-fimbriae of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), preventing them from attaching to the uroepithelial cells lining the urinary tract (StatPearls, 2023). Beyond its anti-adhesive properties, cranberry extract exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities that may contribute to cardiovascular health and the management of metabolic syndrome (PubMed, 2020). While generally recognized as safe, it can interact with medications like warfarin, potentially increasing the risk of bleeding, and its high oxalate content may contribute to kidney stone formation in predisposed individuals (NCCIH, 2023).
