Crystallin gamma G, pseudogene (CRYGGP), also referred to as CRYGGP1 or crystallin, gamma G pseudogene 1, is a non-protein-coding member of the crystallin gene family. The crystallin proteins are major structural components of the vertebrate eye lens, crucial for transparency and refractive index. Gamma-crystallins are highly stable, symmetrical, monomeric proteins organized in gene clusters with pseudogenes in the human genome. CRYGGP is one of three tandemly arranged gamma-crystallin pseudogenes (gamma-E, gamma-F, gamma-G) found on chromosome 2. It is not translated into a functional protein and is generally not involved in any known biological processes or disease phenotypes, serving purely as a vestigial genomic sequence. Unlike functional, protein-coding gamma-crystallin genes (gamma-A to gamma-D) which have defined roles and disease associations (e.g., cataract formation), CRYGGP is not a therapeutic target, biomarker, or drug target, nor is it a functional receptor, enzyme, or transporter with drug interactions. It is a non-functional pseudogene. Information related to functional gamma-crystallin proteins (e.g., CRYGA, CRYGB, CRYGD) is distinct and holds biological/clinical relevance.
