CTAGE family member 16, pseudogene (CTAGE16P) is a non-coding genomic sequence classified as a pseudogene within the CTAGE gene family. Pseudogenes generally do not encode proteins and have historically been considered non-functional relics of ancestral genes. However, some pseudogenes elsewhere in the genome can regulate gene expression by mechanisms such as acting as competitive endogenous RNAs, antisense transcripts, or affecting epigenetic regulation; there is no evidence that CTAGE16P itself has a demonstrated functional or regulatory role. CTAGE16P is not considered a therapeutic target, does not interact directly with drugs, nor does it serve as a disease biomarker. Its primary relevance is as part of the CTAGE family, but "pseudogene" in its name indicates lack of protein-coding function and lack of direct utility as a pharmacological target. Pseudogenes are typically regarded as nonfunctional genomic elements because of mutations that render them incapable of protein production. Nevertheless, some can regulate parental gene expression through RNA-dependent mechanisms, impact gene silencing, or participate in gene conversion and recombination, but these functions are genewise and require specific evidence for each pseudogene. No such evidence exists for CTAGE16P specifically in current scientific databases.
