Cytochrome c, somatic pseudogene 42 (CYCSP42) is a human processed pseudogene, meaning it is a DNA sequence derived from the functional cytochrome c gene (CYCS) but has acquired disabling mutations, truncations, and/or insertion sequences that prevent it from being transcribed or translated into a functional protein[4]. The human genome contains at least 49 such cytochrome c pseudogenes, generally abbreviated as HCP followed by a number for their chromosomal assignment (HCP42 in this case)[4]. Pseudogenes like CYCSP42 are not actively transcribed, do not code for a protein product, and as such do not have any molecular function, biological activity, therapeutic potential, or involvement in disease. They are remnants of gene evolution and do not serve as drug targets, disease biomarkers, or therapeutic receptors/enzyme/transporter targets[3][4][6]. CYCSP42 is thus primarily relevant in the study of genomic structure, evolution, and the potential confounding of genomic assays but has no role in active biological processes.
