Cytochrome c, somatic pseudogene 52 (CYCSP52) is a noncoding genomic locus that shares substantial sequence similarity with the functional cytochrome c gene but incorporates mutations and/or deletions that prevent it from encoding the active cytochrome c protein. Pseudogenes were traditionally believed to be nonfunctional "junk" DNA, but recent data show many are transcribed and may regulate gene expression by acting as competitive endogenous RNAs, microRNA sponges, or via RNA interference pathways. Some pseudogenes—including those of other cancer-related genes—play roles in disease as noncoding RNA regulators. However, for CYCSP52 specifically, no known protein-coding or regulatory function is confirmed, and it is not considered a drug target or direct biomarker. Its biological significance lies chiefly within the broader context of noncoding RNA and pseudogene network regulation[3][4][5].
