Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5A, mitochondrial (COX5A)

Target
COX5A
Molecular classification
Enzyme, mitochondrial electron transport chain protein, oxidoreductase
01

Overview

Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 5A, mitochondrial (COX5A), is a nuclear-encoded subunit of cytochrome c oxidase (Complex IV), the terminal enzyme of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. The protein is located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it is essential for oxidative phosphorylation, facilitating the transfer of electrons from cytochrome c to molecular oxygen, enabling ATP synthesis and maintaining cellular energy. COX5A is implicated in the regulation, assembly, and stability of the enzyme complex. Defects or altered expression of COX5A are associated with complex IV deficiency diseases, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, and altered cell metabolism in cancer. Experimental data suggest COX5A influences neuronal plasticity and is a candidate therapeutic target for conditions of mitochondrial dysfunction
