Overview

Cytokine release (anti-inflammatory effect) refers to the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines, soluble proteins that suppress or resolve inflammatory responses. These cytokines inhibit the production and activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines, upregulate endogenous anti-cytokines, downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokine receptors, and suppress antigen presentation and T cell activation. Key anti-inflammatory cytokines include IL-10, IL-1Ra, IL-4, IL-6 (context-dependent), IL-11, and IL-13. They are produced by monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and certain T lymphocyte subsets. A balanced interplay between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines is essential for health, and therapeutic enhancement of anti-inflammatory cytokine activity is being explored for various conditions.
