Target intelligence / Profile preview
Dampness in Traditional Chinese Medicine is a theoretical pathogenic factor that refers to excessive internal or external moisture affecting the body's physiological processes[1][2][3][6]. It commonly arises from poor digestive function (often linked to Spleen impairment), damp environments, or inappropriate dietary habits[1][2][3][8]. Dampness is characterized by symptoms such as heaviness, sluggishness, swelling, sticky secretions, bloating, loose stools, fatigue, and a feeling of turbidity[5][6]. It may manifest or combine with other TCM pathogenic factors (Heat, Cold, Wind) to form complex syndromes (such as Damp-Heat or Damp-Cold)[4][6]. In chronic conditions, Dampness can “congeal” into Phlegm and is implicated in various health disorders according to TCM—including metabolic diseases, inflammatory disorders, and some chronic Western diagnoses[8]. Treatment in TCM includes dietary management, acupuncture, and specific herbal formulas aimed at "resolving" Dampness but not by direct interaction with biochemical targets[3][5]. Dampness is a clinical/pathogenic diagnosis in the TCM system, not a molecular entity[1][6][8].
